Waihi has many great walks, even within walking distance! Our most favorite one is the walk to Homunga Bay and via Orokawa Bay to Waihi Beach, so quiet, so beautiful. Below are a few of the many options.
This beautiful bay, reached by a well maintained track right from your suite door, will give you the opportunity to smell the native bush and enjoy the scenery till you hear the waves coming in on Homunga’s ever changing Beach. Take a brief shower under the waterfall or relax with your toes curled up in the golden sand.
You can follow the track to the South, that will take you through dense Pohutukawa Forest and you will pass little beaches, don’t forget to turn around to admire the stunning scenery, before you come at Orokawa Beach. A perfect spot to relax or keep going to Waihi Beach, where it is very safe swimming, a beach that goes on for many miles. The track is reasonably tough, but rewarding for those who enjoy a bit more of a challenge.
Karangahake and Waitawheta Gorges
Just out of Waihi you will find breathtaking walks around the Karangahake and Waitawheta Gorges and up Waihi's Black Hill.
Guided walks in the Karangahake gorge are a great option as you learn of the gold mining and natural history during your walk. Half and full day options are available.
Another lovely walk close to the town centre is the Haiku Pathway beside the Uretara Stream where you will find Andesite boulders etched with Haiku verses.
This relatively short walk takes you from the northern end of Waihi Beach to beautiful, secluded Orokawa Bay past spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean and Waihi Beach.
Black Hill Walkway
A short walk along the banks of the Ohinemuri River to Black Hill. Extensive views of Waihi, from the sea to the Karangahake Gorge.
There are many other walks available.
